چکیده

In English Question+Answer (Q+A) pairs, periodicity typically emerges across turn space, to a degree of precision matching standards of music perception. Interactionallyaligned Q+A pairs display such shared periodicity across the turn, while unaligned pairs do not. Periodicity is measured as temporal location of f0 maxima or minima, ‘pikes’, in successive accented syllables. This study asks whether periodicity of pikes across a turn is accompanied by systematic use of musical pitch intervals across the turn space. Recordings of 77 Q+A pairs from 8 pairs of native English speakers talking naturally. Ratios of f0 in the last pike of the Question and the first of the Answer fell more reliably into Western musical interval categories when the Q+A pair’s turn transition was periodic (the Answer was aligned or preferred, re the Question) than when it was aperiodic (disaligned, dispreferred). Similar results were found for ratios of modal f0. Such pitch ratios are better described by musical interval categories of Western tuning systems than by those of three non-Western systems, and best of all by semitones, suggesting close connections between culturally-specific uses of pitch in conversation and in music. Judgments of arousal/valence suggest weak relations with specific pitch intervals. Theoretical implications are discussed.

Local Rules for Computable Planar Tilings

Aperiodic tilings are non-periodic tilings characterized by local constraints. They play a key role in the proof of the undecidability of the domino problem (1964) and naturally model quasicrystals (discovered in 1982). A central question is to characterize, among a class of non-periodic tilings, the aperiodic ones. In this paper, we answer this question for the well-studied class of non-period...

Pitch-Scaled Analysis based Residual Reconstruction for Speech Analysis and Synthesis

The typical problem in LPC-like vocoder is buzzing sound which is mainly due to the simple pulse train or noise excitation model. One way to improve it is to reconstruct the residual obtained from inverse filtering. So a new parametric representation of speech based on pitch-scaled analysis is proposed in this paper. Pitch-scaled analysis is used to extract the periodic spectrum of residual wit...

Detection of Periodicity and Aperiodi on Temporal Infor

In this paper, we discuss a direct measure for the proportion of periodic and aperiodic components in speech signals. Further, in the periodic regions, we estimate the pitch period. This method is particularly useful in situations where the speech signal contains simultaneous periodic and aperiodic energy, as in the case of breathy vowels and some voiced obstruents. The performance of this algo...

A measure of aperiodicity and periodicity in speech

In this paper, we discuss a direct measure for aperiodic energy and periodic energy in speech signals. Most measures for aperiodicity have been indirect, such as zero crossing rate, highfrequency energy and the ratio of high-frequency energy to lowfrequency energy. Such indirect measurements will usually fail in situations where there is both strong periodic and aperiodic energy in the speech s...

A Note on the Average Complexity Analysis of the Computation of Periodic and Aperiodic Ternary Complementary Pairs

We give an average complexity analysis for a new formalism pertaining periodic and aperiodic ternary complementary pairs. The analysis is done in three levels, so that we end up with an accurate estimate. The way of separating the candidate pairs into suitable classes of ternary sequences is interesting, allowing us to use fundamental tools of Symbolic Computation, such as Holonomic functions a...
